Political Office Sought: Candidate for State Representative, Hillsborough District 28

Family Information

My wife and I have lived in the same house in North Weare for 38 years. She is now retired after a long career in teaching, including over 30 years at Center Woods Elementary School and before that Weare Elementary School. We have 2 grown daughters, both living in Weare. One is also a retired elementary school teacher, the other a registered nurse. And we have four grandchildren; the youngest is about to embark on her new adventure as a university student.

Education

Graduate of Boston University with a bachelor’s degree in History.

Studied at Franklin Pierce College and received NH teaching certificate.

Profession

I am retired after a lifetime as a sales representative, first in consumer electronics and then, with a few detours, 20 years in commercial lighting. I started substitute teaching at John Stark 12 years ago when our oldest grandkid started there, and I have stayed to watch all four through their high school years. In retirement I have increased my classroom time, and also substituted at Concord High School, Henniker Community School and Hopkinton High School.

Affiliations

I have been active with the Weare Democrats. I am a life member of the NRA and also a life member of Pioneer Sportsmen in Dunbarton, where I have served as a director, vice president and president. I provide support for several local and national organizations whose activities focus on relieving hunger and homelessness, conservation, and defense of individual rights.

Political Experience

I am currently serving in my first year on the Weare School Board.

Why am I running for State Representative?

Too often the loudest voices dominate the political landscape. I will represent the quiet voices of the majority of the people of Weare, regardless of their political affiliation.

What issues do I plan to address in order to improve our community/state?

1. Meeting our obligation to provide a safe, high-quality education to our children (and grandchildren).

2. Defending hard-won rights.

How will your skills/background contribute to the position you are running for?

Nearly 50 years in sales have taught me the importance of earnest listening as the way of getting to “Yes.”

Political Office Sought: Candidate for State Representative, Hillsborough District 28

Education

  • I attended a good public elementary school in Norton MA, then my parents sent me to a prep school for two years before I insisted on returning to public High School.
  • 1971-1984 (the thirteen year plan while raising kids): BA from Brown University with course work at six NH colleges along the way!
  • 2005 Highly qualified to teach social studies through graduate work at New England College

Family Information

  • I built my home in Weare in 1980. It was a good place to raise my two sons and my step daughter, now all successful adults. My sons attended John Stark High School. I have one grandchild who is gender fluid and they have 2 children.

Professional

I began working as a carpenter to earn money during the summer while in college in the early seventies. I worked for Community Builders when I first moved to NH in 1976. I have been self-employed doing carpentry and repairs almost every year since. I have never had to advertise.

I took a job in Concord in 1999 teaching middle school Tech. Ed and earned my teaching certificate through the alternative process while teaching. I designed my curriculum which was a combination of engineering design process and 3D modeling, and then the students built what they designed in the wood-shop lab. Almost every student enjoyed the class and I enjoyed my students. I retired from teaching in 2018. I now work part time as a carpenter and doing repairs.

Organizations & Affiliations

  • I have worshiped with the Society of Friends (Quakers) since the seventies and I’m now a Member of the Weare Friends Meeting.
  • I led youth groups, often with my chosen age group, the energetic 11 to 14 year olds.
  • I volunteer at the library working with kids.
  • I have been an active volunteer with our local land conservancy for a couple decades, maintaining trails and monitoring easements. I enjoy getting out in the back woods.

Political Experience

  • Member of the Weare Planning Board in the 1990s
  • Member of the Solid Waste Committee in town as we set up our transfer station.

Why am I running for State Representative?

  • Public Education –  Our Commissioner of Education doesn’t send his children to public schools and has eroded the funding and integrity of our system and down shifted the funding to local districts increasing local taxes. We need fair even handed funding for our schools so ALL children get really good schools.
  • Healthcare – Access to good healthcare and safe legal abortion services shouldn’t depend on your income.
  • Gun Safety – I own a 22 and a shotgun. I can live with the state laws limiting the number of rounds I can use when hunting. We need to agree on compromises needed to prevent suicides and other gun violence.
  • Environment – We have postponed the implementation of proven clean transportation, conservation and energy generation plans. I’ll work to change that.

How will your skills/background contribute to the position you are running for?

I think my words above allow you to know that I have not followed a traditional path, but I have been a successful carpenter, educator and citizen. I get along with a wide variety of people. I listen and come up with compromises and collaborate with others to get useful things done. I want to do that representing the people of Weare in the Statehouse.

Candidacy Questions – Answer the following prompts about your candidacy. Let the voters know why you are running for office and what you hope to accomplish in our community.

  1. PUBLIC EDUCATION:  Working as a high school teacher for 26 years, I know first-hand how difficult and emotional the work of a teacher is and how poorly public education in NH is funded.  What I find to be so disheartening is the amount of disrespect, misinformation and the lack of support I have seen over the years towards certified teachers working in our public-school system.  One of the reasons I am running is to be a voice and advocate of our public schools and stop the funneling of our tax dollars to private schools.
  • MAKING SCHOOLS SAFE: No parent should cry watching their child go into school wondering if they will see them at the end of the day.  I want to be a voice for parents of school age children by addressing legislation to keep students and teachers safe like implementing Alyssa’s Law and sensible gun safety laws.
  • ABORTION RIGHTS:  I will fight to ensure that New Hampshire does not roll back or abolish women reproductive rights.
  • SENSIBLE GUN SAFETY LAWS:  Knowing that this is a complex topic on both sides, we as a community and state need to come together and have a proper, respectful conversation on guns. Neither side is 100% right or wrong though ultimately our goals are the same: keeping ourselves and our families safe. Let’s teach each other on how this can be accomplished.

How will your skills/background contribute to the position you are running for?

Having spent 26 years in public education as a teacher and administrator I have intricate knowledge of how the public education system works and how it can be improved and made safer for teachers and students.

              Bulleted skills

  • Using organizational and leadership skills, my career and volunteer work has been focused on students, ensuring they have the skills needed to become productive and caring NH citizens.

Education/Family/Personal

Family Information

I was raised in Schenectady, New York in a loving, wonderful family. My brother and I were the first generation in our family to go to college. After graduating from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., I came to New Hampshire to work as a college debate coach.

My wife, Linda Taylor, and I have been married for the past 25 years. In 1996, we purchased land in Weare where we built our home and farm. Linda is a teacher of deaf and hard of hearing children and I am a farmer. We have two grown children who attended the Weare public schools from K-12. Our son, Ben, is a high school history teacher, and our daughter, Emma, is a senior in college.

Education

Catholic University of America,1979, BA, Philosophy

UNH School of Law/Franklin Pierce Law Center 1983, JD, Law Degree

Member of the NH Bar Association since 1984, inactive status

Profession

Founder and Attorney for the NH Mental Health Law Clinic in the 1980s

Certified organic farmer (self-employed) for the past 36 years.

College debate coach for the past 43 years.

Founder and member of an organic farmer’s cooperative for 20 years.

Organizations & Affiliations

I have coached youth sports (jump rope) for the past 13 years, started an elementary school LEGO club, and coached middle school robotics for 5 years.

Political Experience

I am a political outsider and have not held public office before.

Candidacy Questions – Answer the following prompts about your candidacy. Let the voters know why you are running for office and what you hope to accomplish in our community.

Why are you running for this elected office?

We need elected officials who will work for reasonable solutions to our issues and who will listen to the concerns of the people of Weare and Goffstown. Weare has been a good place to raise a family and run a small business. I am running for office to help keep our towns and region as a great place to live, raise a family and retire.

Within your authority as an elected official, what issues do you plan to address to improve our community/state?

I am dedicated to supporting the following:

(1) Schools

(2) LGBTQ rights

(3) Guaranteeing access to reproductive rights and health care

(4) Supporting green energy and fighting climate change

(5) Protecting our right to vote

(6) Affordable health care (including mental health care) for everyone

(7) Keeping our taxes low, helping senior citizens remain in their homes

How will your skills/background contribute to the position you are running for?

We have run a small family business (a certified organic vegetable farm) for 36 years. This has taught me how to work with people and to appreciate the challenges that people in our community are facing and the challenges that small business owners face.

I have a background in law and have trained college students in public policy for over 40 years. This has prepared me to study policy alternatives. I would use my skills to help create and fight for good legislation.

When our children were little, I was a stay-at-home dad. This has taught me to respect the important work of our caregivers –people who care for their children, those who care for a spouse, or who help an aging parent or neighbor.

I have volunteered as a coach with youth teams in jump rope and robotics for the past 17 years. This has given me the wonderful opportunity to work with children, get to know their parents, and to listen to their concerns for the community and the world at large. I have been the Production Manager for a 200+ family CSA (community supported agriculture) made up of six certified organic farms for 20 years. This has involved organizing crops, making budgets, and grant writing.

Why am I running for State Senate?

After 33 years of public service, my plan at the end of 2021 was to retire. However, I grew increasingly alarmed over the attacks on reproductive rights, particularly with the Executive Council voting several times down party lines to defund family planning contracts.

As a former Republican State Representative in 2011-2012, I voted for abortion restrictions. At the time, my decision-making process was rooted in ideology rather than experience. Since then, I have served in numerous healthcare related positions that led me to think differently about reproductive rights.  As Mayor, I worked with families dealing with very complex situations.  These experiences gave me a better understanding of the importance of Planned Parenthood to the Claremont community. The Executive Council’s decision to defund Planned Parenthood is part of the reason that Claremont’s office is now closed.

It is my position that government should not be involved in reproductive healthcare decisions.  It cannot anticipate every scenario or variable that can occur in the family planning process.  As we are now witnessing across the nation, when government tries to insert itself in that decision process, it hurts people.  Abortion is a healthcare decision that belongs to a pregnant person in consultation with their healthcare provider. Should someone choose to have an abortion, that person should have access to safe, legal, accessible abortion care.

Last year, anti-abortion legislators introduced a package of bills to deeply restrict or ban abortion in New Hampshire, and it is fair to say that reproductive rights are on the ballot this November. Protecting reproductive rights is a major factor in my decision to re-enter the political ring and to run for State Senate.

In addition to protecting reproductive rights, my campaign is focused on what I am calling the three “Essentials”: the Economy, Public Education, and the Environment, with a focus on renewable energy.

Economy – We need an economy that works for all of us. This includes affordable housing, healthcare, and access to childcare. Families and businesses are facing barriers to their wellbeing, and it is time for state government to help create solutions to the major problems we face.

Public Education – It has been decades since the New Hampshire Supreme Court decreed that all Granite State children have a constitutional right to an adequate education, and we have still not resolved this issue. Children deserve access to a quality education, regardless of what town they come from. We need to invest in public education.  Sacrificing public education for other alternatives is not school choice.

Environment / Energy – These are exciting times in the renewable energy sector.  The development of new technologies not only allow us to protect our environment and meet our climate goals, but also develop new industries with good-paying jobs.   Such opportunities will give our youth a future right here at home.

I believe the purpose of government is to create an environment of safety and security and to provide a framework of equitable opportunity so that everyone can live up to their fullest potential. People are always an organization’s most valuable resource – whether in the military, in the non-profit sector, in business, or in our communities – and we must invest in people to have thriving families and prosperous communities.

How will your skills/background contribute to the position you are running for?

While I was Mayor, the City of Claremont became a leader in the state on childhood lead poisoning prevention.  We were recognized by the state for our renewable energy investments and energy-efficiency initiatives.  We advocated successfully for public education funding, resulting in over four million dollars being reinvested in our school district.  As a community we funded a multi-million dollar revitalization project in our City Center, attracting developers who converted vacant and condemned buildings into affordable and market-rate housing. This success was not based on my actions alone.  Rather, it was the result of effective partnerships and collaboration. Coming from a military background, I am mission-driven, and I always use the same approach to solving problems: 1) identify and research the problem, 2) bring together all of the stakeholders, 3) agree on a set of common goals and objectives, and 4) get the job done. This is the approach that I will bring to the NH Senate to serve our communities.

Political Office Sought: Executive Council District Five

Education/Family/Personal

Family Information

My story is a quintessential NH boomerang story. I grew up in the rural, but beautiful Lakes Region. After graduating from Moultonborough Academy, I went to the big city to attend Boston University with a major in Communications. That’s where I met my future husband David. We moved back to New Hampshire in 2005 after graduation and settled in Nashua. In 2009, we become homeowners, and in 2011 and 2019 we were given the titles of Mom and Dad. When I am not working at my downtown business, I can be found chasing Elsa, Miles, and our two chickens around our little cul-de-sac.

Education

Moultonborough Academy, Class of 2001

Boston University, Bachelor of Science in Communications

Profession

I am a proud business owner with my communications firm located in downtown Nashua. Before I started my business, I worked for the biggest agencies in New England, working on clients like HSBC, Buick/GMC, Panera, Stride Rite, and more. Now I take pride in helping women-owned businesses, nonprofits, and other community businesses deliver the right message to grow and thrive.

Organizations and Affiliations

Co-Founder and Chair, Our Moment PAC

Board Member, Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter (NSKS)

Board Member, Symphony NH

Volunteer, Meals for Kids and Solutions At Work

Volunteer, Nashua Children’s Home

Political Experience

I was first elected as an Alderman-At-Large in 2017 and was re-elected in 2021. In my time on the Board, I have proudly supported public education, started Nashua’s Pride Festival, assisted small businesses, and fought the climate crisis at the local level.

Why am I running for the Executive Council?

I am running for the Executive Council to continue the work in Concord to make sure all Granite Staters have a seat at the table. As Southern New Hampshire moves forward in its mission to become a destination for young families and professionals, I am ready to be the face of leadership that brings new ideas to the table.

  • Reproductive Rights: restoring funding to family planning and cancer screening programs through Planned Parenthood and appointing judges who support body autonomy.
  • Strong Schools: stop downshifting to communities and use the surplus to support public education; I will only vote in favor of a Commissioner of Education nominee who believes in public education.
  • Commuter Rail: prioritizing commuter rail as an economic driver that benefits all corners of the state.
  • Climate + Energy: leveraging my experience on the Energy and Environmental Committee to prioritize energy efficiency at every level.

How will your skills/background contribute to the position you are running for?

The ability to communicate clearly and concisely is powerful. As a communications professional with nearly 20 years of experience, I put those skills to work in my community. As an Alderwoman-At-Large with five years on the Board of Alderman, I have added to my knowledge of government through my committee work and community outreach.

  • Finance committee member for four years reviewing all city contracts over $10,000
  • Energy and Environmental Committee liaison advocating for strong, energy-efficient policies
  • Budget committee member for five years interfacing with all city departments and managing a city budget of over 300 million dollars
  • Mother of a public school student who qualifies for a 504 plan, bringing daily experience to my work on the Board
